The magnificent country of Austria, being surrounded by the great Alps, gives us innumerable opportunities for doing alpine skiing. Nearly each valley and mountain are prepared with at least a few ski runs. Amidst the most fashionable of these are found in the mountains of Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorlarberg. The biggest ski resorts in the Austrian Alps offer tourists about ninety lifts and over 250 kilometers of ski runs, for instance the Zillertal Valley, the Wilder Kaiser ski area and the Arlberg, the "cradle" of alpine skiing. There are also various ski circuits on big glaciers, where skiing can be done in the summer too (for instance Solden, one of the most important glaciers in the country). Several cities and communities in Austria are oftentimes hosts for world cup contests, amongst which we can name the men's Streif - Kitzbuhel descent. Innsbruck, the capital of the state of Tyrol, has been the home of the Winter Olympic Games twice, in 1964 and 1976. These are only a few of the reasons why alpine skiing is one of the most important attractions in Austrian travel, which is the main economic sector of the country. In the majority of tourists' heads, the name "Austria" is a synonym for snowboarding, snowy mountains and winter sports. Rarely one can observe a view to match so great a tourist's desires: the predominant colors of winter and spring are the clean white of the snow and the beautiful blue of the skies. This kind of scenery can only convince one to take a few days off and enjoy all the winter activities that one could think of: not only classic ski, but also snowboarding, carving, alpine skiing and slope descents during the day, and in some places also during the night. Alternatively you can put on your snowshoes and hike through the snowy mountain passes and enjoy a wonderful day, and after that you can relax at nightfall at the spas and thermal baths of the hotels you are staying. When coming back from the ski slope, your muscles only ask for some relaxation and warmth, and that is the reason why a perfect vacation is when you can combine sports with spas and wellness.
